There are currently 311 million people in the continental US alone and only an estimated 35,000 optometrists to aid them. Well, there is a big deficiency in the number of optometrists.
Basically, on the average, there are about 25 new optometrists annually and an even noticeable increase in migrant skilled workers requesting licenses to practice optometry in the country. There is most definitely not a shortage but there’s always room for more. Among the states, California has one highest average of optometrists per capita, ranking 9th with 11.1 optometrists for every 100,000 people. There is a disparaging difference to the country’s average of only 8.7 optometrists for every 100,000 people.
However, after the discussions stated above we can clearly state that as far as optometrists go, demand and location doesn’t necessarily dictate the optometrist salary. This is probably also to encourage optometrists to move their practices in rural areas where they are sorely needed.
